Event-Driven Architecture Needs Product Thinking

Event-driven systems often fail when they are treated as purely technical projects.

The business needs to understand the events.

A refund requested is not the same as a refund approved.

A payment initiated is not the same as a payment completed.

A booking reserved is not the same as a ticket issued.

These distinctions matter.

If events are named vaguely, downstream systems make wrong assumptions. Reports become confusing. Support teams cannot explain status. Integrations become fragile.

Event design should involve product owners, analysts, developers, and operations.

The question is not only “What message do we publish?”

The question is “What business fact are we recording?”

A good event catalogue becomes a shared language between business and technology. A bad one becomes technical noise.

Event-driven architecture is not just about queues and brokers.

It is about modelling business change accurately.
