Software Development Is Becoming More Like Supervision Than Typing

A developer’s job is changing.

Not disappearing. Changing.

More code can now be generated quickly. More boilerplate can be skipped. More examples can be produced in seconds. That does not remove the developer. It changes where the developer’s attention goes.

The work shifts toward supervision.

Is the requirement correct?

Is the generated code safe?

Does it fit the existing architecture?

Does it handle failure?

Does it expose data incorrectly?

Does it create a maintenance problem six months from now?

The typing was never the highest-value part of software development. It only looked that way because typing was visible.

The real work is judgement.

AI will make weak developers faster at creating weak systems. It will make strong developers faster at exploring options. The gap may widen, not shrink.

The future developer may write less code manually, but they will need sharper architecture, testing, security, and debugging instincts.

The keyboard is becoming less important. The review brain is becoming more important.
